iDEAL has been the default way to pay online in the Netherlands for years. Now it’s changing hands and names. iDEAL is owned by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), the bank-backed company behind Wero, and it’s being folded into Wero in stages.
The timeline
- 29 January to 31 March 2026: co-branding. Checkouts had to switch to the “iDEAL | Wero” logo and name. Payments worked the same way.
- From Q4 2026: Wero arrives for Dutch shoppers. Customers can start paying with Wero, and merchants can offer it alongside iDEAL.
- Expected 2027 to 2028: iDEAL is switched off. Merchants move fully to Wero.
What changes at checkout
For customers, little at first: they still approve payments in their banking app. Over time, Wero adds features iDEAL didn’t have, such as a wallet that works across countries where Wero is live, and Wero plans a subscription feature of its own.
For merchants, the main tasks are:
- Keep the branding current. If you built a custom checkout, the logo and name must say “iDEAL | Wero”.
- Add Wero when it’s available to you. Test it side by side with iDEAL before switching.
- Check your subscriptions. Subscriptions started with iDEAL usually continue on SEPA Direct Debit and aren’t affected by switching iDEAL off.
- Plan one clean cut-over rather than running both methods for years.
The bigger picture
Wero is EPI’s attempt to give Europe a payment method of its own. It is also coming to Belgium through Bancontact Company and to Austria, where Erste Bank and Raiffeisen joined EPI in 2026. Read more in Wero and the future of Europe’s local payment methods.
