Bizum started as a way for Spaniards to send money to friends and has become one of Spain’s most used ways to pay online. With more than 30 million users, it covers practically the whole banked adult population, and it handled over 100 million online payments in 2025.
How Bizum works online
The customer enters their phone number at checkout and approves the payment in their own banking app. The money moves as an instant bank transfer, with no card details involved and strong authentication built in. Settlement is instant, and fees are typically lower than for cards.
Bizum is growing beyond online
In May 2026 Bizum launched contactless in-store payments, which is bringing even more Spaniards into the habit of paying with it. Bizum is also a founding member of the EuroPA alliance, which aims to connect it with other European payment apps for cross-border payments.
Tips for Spain
- Show Bizum near the top of your Spanish checkout, especially on mobile.
- Pre-fill the phone number for logged-in customers.
- Explain the approval step: “Confirm the payment in your bank’s app.”
